Toft 2 - 0 Potter Street Baptist
Thursday, 3 June 2010
Toft emerged as winners of the prestigious National Christian Trophy after overcoming Potter Street Baptist with a solid, professional performance.
In the luxurious surroundings of the magnificent Sixfields stadium in Northampton, Toft met another Essex side in a bid for their first silverware. The Tornados had been hyped up with another Azouz special and resulted in about five team huddles before kick off. The opening exchanges were nervy and resulted in an unusual amount of throw ins. As the game settled it became apparent that the first half would be open with the game going from end to end. Although there was no clear cut chances to speak of, Crook, Potter Street’s dangerous striker was causing problems with his pace whilst Berisford-Ince’s strength and touch were giving the purples something to think about.
As the half ticked on, Sutcliffe was able to beat his full back on more than one occasion and opened the scoring after being played in by Harrison. He managed to beat the flapping keeper before slotting into an empty net. The crowd went delirious and the half time whistle blew ending a whirlwind first half.
The second half required some tactical changes. Playing into the wind, the Tornados sat deeper to close the game up and had to absorb more pressure. However, the improved shape meant that they also looked more comfortable and the back four dealt with any attacks easily. Moore also played his part on the big occasion with a couple of terrific saves, one with his feet. The next goal’s importance was clear and both teams were cautious in their play. Gibson came on in place of sharpshooter Harrison and made an immediate impact. Berisford-Ince’s run and weighted pass fed in Gibson as he charged down the wing. He took one touch and fired (not scuffed) it into the bottom corner. Cue proud smiles from all. Gibson could and should have made it two a few minutes later but managed to put it wide from 8 yards. No matter, Toft were resolute and Potter Street could not have broken them down with 900 minutes never mind 90.
The full time whistle brought Toft the title of National champions and an end the marathon 2009-2010 season. It’s been emotional!
